| Working with resin models |
Tools
Files and sand paper
A set of needle files ist available from every hobby shop. Sandpaper should not be too coarse. A grain of 120 works best. Files as well as sandpaper are very useful for cleaning up excess resin.
Craft Knife
A knife is used to remove bigger amounts of flash. Be careful when using a knife, as you can easily do serious harm to the model or yourself.
Clippers
Can be used to remove gates or vents, in case these are too big for a knife.
Glue
Our kits can be either glued with two-part epoxy glue or CA-superglue, which is available from our online-store. Unfortunately, normal plastic glue or white glue will not work.
Dust Mask
When sanding or filing resin, a dust mask should be worn. Resin dust can be seriously harmful when inhaled.
Preparation
Washing
Washing the parts can be necessary to remove the release agent residues. This should be done using water, soap (dishwashing liquid works fine) and a toothbrush. It may not be strictly necessary, but it is far better than chipping paint later on.
Cleaning up
As with all model kits, excess material has to be removed because a) it looks bad and b) may inhibit proper fitting of the parts. Simple mould lines are easiest removed with sandpaper or a knife. Gates and vents are best removed with a clipper or a knife. Resin softens when heated, so slight warpage might occur during transport. This can easily be corrected with a hair dryer. Simply heat the part, bend it in the correct shape and immerse it in cold water. Be careful with open flames, since resin is inflammable. If there are small air bubbles, these can be filled with modelling putty
Warping
Resin softens when heated, so slight warpage might occur. This can easily be corrected with a hair dryer. Simply heat the part, bend it in the correct shape and immerse it in cold water. Be careful with open flames, since resin is inflammable.
This physical property of resin can be used to our advantage, however: when warmed, streets are easily modelled into hills, for example.
